Hormone Explanation

Dr. Davenport prescribes individualized restoration of physiologic hormone levels.  These are the bio-equivalent hormones of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA and pregnenolone when indicated by specific symptoms.

With many women is it appealing to replace progesterone regardless of the absence of a uterus.  Natural progesterone has many other benefits including the ability to rebuild bone, even after it has been lost and to improve sleep, mood, concentration and memory.

Estrogen replacement is often a quality of life issue for women.  Animal experiments and observational studies support the concept that estrogen replacement reduces arteriosclerosis and protects the cardiovascular system.

These animal studies and the recent HERS study and the WHI (Women's Health Initiative) study suggest no benefit after the development of arteriosclerosis.  Estrogen replacement may be best viewed from a preventative perspective.

Optimal hormone replacement involves both monitoring the blood levels and adjustment of the dose according to individual blood levels and symptomatic response.

Breast soreness is usually transient.  Fluid retention and weight gain are most infrequent.  A genetic predisposition to thrombosis (blood colts) is not rare.

Women with personal or family history of thrombophlebitis should be evaluated prior to hormone replacement.  The prevailing opinion is that non oral HRT does not effect coagulation.  Ideally it is appealing to avoid oral administration of natural hormones to minimize the hepatic effects.

Dr. Davenport's view is that optimal replacement involves individualized restoration of bio-equivalent hormones with each woman's special needs and concerns addressed.

The cost is approximately $40.00 per month for troches which dissolve in the gums.  Oral capsules are also available although Dr. Davenport prefers to initially bypass the liver with an troche which is absorbed through the gums.  These are usually taken twice a day and are followed by blood levels when necessary which is at least once a year.
